Alonissos
As of December 1, 2015, Alonissos abolished plastic bags
κand now uses cloth bags, it is the first region in Greece that, through the program “Alonissos without plastic bags”,
eliminates the use of the plastic bag.
Alonissos is the third island in the series after Skopelos and is about 2 nautical miles away from it.
Its peculiarity in relation to the other islands of Skopelos and Skiathos is that it has scattered desert and rocky islands that give it a separate animal and plant kingdom. In the area of Alonissos, the first National Marine Park of our country was established in 1992 for the protection of the Monachus-Monachus seal.
Alonissos is the “Ecological” island of the Sporades, with a special natural environment and the possibility of implementing many alternative tourism activities.
The ancient name of Alonissos was IKOS and then Achilliadromia. Patitiri Bay is the port of the island and is connected by ferry to Volos, Skiathos, Skopelos and Thessaloniki.
Characteristics :
- Its total area reaches 64.5 sq km. and the length of its coast is approximately 67 km
- There is a main road that crosses the island and smaller dirt roads that lead to the beaches.
- Most of the beaches are located on the south side of the island. The northern side has fewer beaches and is steeper.
- Around Alonissos there are scattered hermitages, the most famous of which are Kyra Panagia, Peristera and Psathoura
